Sometimes the only part of the meal you want to sink your teeth into is the dessert. Unfortunately, dessert is what concludes the meal, so you have to finish your main meal before you get your hands on something sweet. Another drawback is you can’t have your cake and eat it to, because you will be paying for it afterwards in the gym the next day. However, everything is good in moderation and what would life be without a little indulgence now and again.
Did you know that the word ‘dessert’ originated from the French word ‘desservir’ which means “to clear the table” or “un-serve”? That is why dessert is always served after the table is cleared of any dishes. The concept is mentioned a few times in the late 14th century, however doesn’t have any significance until 1900. The word “dessert” is more widely used in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The word “pudding” is used in the United Kingdom instead of “dessert” The terms “sweets” or “afters” are also used to refer to dessert in the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth countries such as Hong Kong and India.
